An apprenticeship or traineeship can transform your life and give you career prospects you wouldn't have access to. They combine practical, paid employment with structured training in order to achieve a nationally recognised qualification. Both apprenticeships and traineeships are referred to as ‘Australian Apprenticeships'. You'll get paid while gaining valuable workplace experience and training, as well as off-the-job learning through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). These can be very flexible and be completed as full-time, part-time or even while you are still at school.
An apprenticeship or traineeship will:
- give you practical hands on experience in your chosen industry
- help you develop important on-the-job learning and knowledge
- let you earn a wage while working and training
- give you a nationally recognised qualification
- let you finish your qualification sooner as the competency based training can be sped up depending on your learning abilities

What is a school-based apprenticeship/traineeship?
A school-based apprenticeship or traineeship, also known as a “SBAT,” is a type of apprenticeship or traineeship that is completed while a student is still in secondary school.
An SBAT provides students with a head start on their chosen career path by providing them with real-world work experience and training while they are still in school.
One of the main benefits of a SBAT is that it allows students to begin earning money and building their skills and experience in their chosen field. This can help participants to be more competitive when they enter the workforce after graduation. Additionally, students who participate in SBATs are more likely to complete their apprenticeship or traineeship, which can lead to better job prospects and higher earning potential.
What's the difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship?
An apprenticeship is a type vocation training where you will earn a wage that increases incrementally over a four-year period, whilst also working towards qualification related to your industry. Apprenticeships are less broad compared to traineeships and are mainly available for trade based roles.
A traineeship is also a type of vocational training (training under a supervisor) where you earn a wage and learn about the industry and job you’re in! Traineeships cover a huge range of industries (over 700) from business-related fields such as marketing or administration, to hospitality & more! For an apprenticeship or traineeship to be successful it is crucial to find an opportunity with an employer that you will work well with. Am I protected in any way?
Apprentices and trainees enter into a formal training contract with their employer. This is signed by both sides and outlines important areas on wages, duties and expectations during the course of your apprenticeship. If you ever feel that your employer is not following the terms of your training contract you can get in touch with us and we will assist you in resolving any issues that have arisen.
